The original nike roshe one women's shoe was introduced to the public back in 2012 as an affordable, minimalist entry in the runner category. Drawing on his own experiences meditating, Nike designer Dylan Raasch took inspiration from the aesthetic simplicity and balance of Zen Buddhist gardens: the sole was inspired by steppingstones; the insole imitated the look of a freshly-raked lawn of sand; even the original “Iguana” colorway took cues from the moss found growing in and around temples. Roshe is actually pronounced “roshi,” based on the Rōshi title bestowed upon Zen Buddhist masters, but the name had to be changed for legal reasons.

With an outsole evoking carefully laid stepping stones and an insole mimicking a freshly raked rock garden, the Roshe Run represents an interplay of serious and playful design. With an eye to keeping costs low and carbon footprints small, the usual method of creating a sole with a cushioned mid and rubber bottom was eschewed for a single-foamed unit which was both durable and comfortable, thus cutting back on manufacturing costs. With a handful of two-toned palettes now available, we look ahead to the remainder of 2012 to see the soulful sneakers flip some fresh new fabrics.

Nike has announced it is extending the use of its knitted footwear technology to its nike roshe run one black range of trainers.The Flyknit textile, which reduces waste by ergonomically weaving the footwear in one piece, has been used to create a collection of one-of-a-kind styles.Designers at the American firm have taken the environmentally friendly approach even further by using excess yarn left on spools from other Flyknit models to produce the limited edition release.
